| Let me start off by saying, I have not given any money, and I do not plan on giving any. Dont get me wrong, I love Haitians just as much as the next guy, but I dont agree with the economic implications, nor governments arbitrarily spending tax payer money. I also find it amazing, how a country in total economic, and social ruins can go completely ignored until a natural disaster. Do people think it was all sunshine, and rainbows before the earthquake? I also don't understand the reasoning behind donating, other then of course the ability to tell people you donated. Is it the warm fuzzy feeling? Because if it is, let me tell you that by giving someone your seat on the bus, you can get the same feeling(Maybe better), do me a favor try it next time. Maybe its just the easy way out? By giving a company money to help someone, you free yourself from any emotional attachment, or engagement. We can feel good about helping someone, and yet at the same time are free from the fear of emotional attachment. Do we fear the engagement, that surly follows when we give to someone in need? An engagement, just as in a relationship. An engagement of understand, forgiveness, and openness. What is it we fear when we are in a position of wealth,or power, that restrains us from helping others? Maybe, this is not as controversial as I could have made it.

| Thanks for contributing your post, Darius. Personally...I haven't 'donated' yet, and I do have pangs of guilt when I realise that. It's as you said...it's more that I realise that I've been completely ignorant to Haiti beforehand and am suddenly compelled to reach out to them that disturbs me.
In a sense...donating money would alleviate that 'guilt' or shame I felt for not paying Haiti heed beforehand. So in that sense, donating would be a 'selfish' act, on my part.
However, does that change the fact that the people there are suffering for resources right now? Wouldn't my 'selfish' act of giving still have a positive impact, even if my subconscious intentions are selfish? "What is it we fear when we are in a position of power, wealth?" I'm not sure if it's fear that underlying our inability to give while we're in positions of authority. I've actually thought about these topics (power, money) recently, and came to the personal observation that...put simply--people get damn greedy when they have such resources at their disposal. They focus on 'how can I make more'? Instead of, 'how can I give back'? I'd say this attitude reflects North American culture up pretty well...where everyone is constantly in a rush to obtain more more more of everything.

| i have not donated either, nor do i plan to. why? i agree with darius about the economical situation but maybe from a different standpoint i suppose. yes, they are in need and are not as beneficial as other countries or as fortunate, but at the same time, i would rather see the taxpayers money as well as their choices of spending their money,going towards helping to fix our economy (here in the US). i realize it may be selfish, but for me i dont see any progress in the long run if we cant even fix our own situation, let alone try and help out someone else. i do donate to charities and health orginizations though although not as much or as often as i used to before the current economic situation. najin, north american culture; for as many greedy and wealthy people that are out there, there are,from my experiences, just as many generous people as well. im not saying that its an equal amount for i really i dont know, but overall, i recall reading that 5% of the world or US's population holds the wealth in the world/country. i dunno, i could be recalling it wrong as my brain is mush from catching up on schoolwork lol. granted, it doesnt take into acct all the mid level people who claw their way up to the top for more and more, but there are a lot of people out there in the world who are content as long as they have the intangibles. i dunno, thats just my viewpoint. najinder mohinder ba baa baloo...have a good day:)

| I have a strange fascination with economics, and when speaking of the economic implications, I meant the unintended consequences rather then the tax dollars being diverted. (One example is the artificial demand for Haitian currency, which will make production less competitive in the world market, consequently hurting Haiti in the long term) Najin, to some extent I can agree with your personal observation of greed. Although, I think that Greed, and Fear, are much in the same thing(When speaking in material terms, rather then genuine physical danger of course). Are you greedy, for wanting that new car, or are you fearful, of not having that new car? In my opinion, it may be greed that pushes us into a competitive advantage over our competitors, but it is fear that keeps us in the positions of power we have gotten through greed. When you are in a competition, be it a race for example, it will be greed that pushes you passed the person in first place, but is it not fear that pushes forward when there is no one to pass?(You are already in first place, how can you have greed for something you have already obtained?) This opinion may have afew holes, for I understand completely, the unrelenting push for power held by corporations, and I believe that will never stop; although I do believe that many people have found happiness, through other avenues, and the greed for power and money is long forgotten. I believe it is the power hold corporations have on North America, not the true values of Americans, and Canadians that push us to consume.
